Blade Runner Bungle

A big ol' Boo and Hiss to Warner Bros. for, once again, neglecting one of their undisputed classic films.

I'm speaking of the shoddy treatment by the media giant of the science fiction classic "Blade Runner".

The studio mentioned, in a press release about a year ago, that BR would be re-released theatrically--around the same time as its original release--in 2007, and released in a multi-disc DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD set in the fall of this year. But today, which is the 25th anniversary of the film's theatrical release...nothing. No news updates, no hard dates for the theatrical re-release or DVD re-release. Nothing.

I look at how other major entertainment events occurring this year are being whored...just look at all the Halo 3 marketing and hype going on...and yet this classic film's legacy is far away from the public's consciousness.

Perhaps, in terms of marketing, this is a sign of things to come: perhaps video games ARE being marketed and pushed at the masses much harder than films because they're becoming a more important art form, or entertainment medium, or what have you.

Or, equally likely, film studio execs really are as stupid as we've been led to believe.

As for Blade Runner specifically, this anniversary blunder is just another bruised chapter in this troubled film's history: the damned studio really doesn't understand what a boon it has on its hands, and how influential this film has been. And it NEVER has.

Warner, you suck!
